Macaron Madness

This wicked chocolate witch laugh is dedicated to Carol at ParisBreakfasts. [Please insert your best imagined Lauren Bacall-sounding wicked witch laugh here.]

Carol will not stop torturing me with pictures and accountings of her devourings of macarons, which, as you know, are a passion of mine.

And so I finally had to learn how to make them:


[Re-insert wicked witch laugh here, only this time with more gloating and maybe a chocolate smudge on the witch’s mouth.]

P.S. If any of you recognize the photo background as a Carter’s baby blanket, you are welcome NOT to mention it. It is covering over the stuffed animals, also perhaps some stray stacks of Dagoba and Green & Black’s chocolate bars (there was a sale! it’s not my fault!) and a bottle of olive oil. I don’t know where to put these things. If YOU can organize my house, I will make macarons for you, I promise.

P.P.S. Yes, I will talk about things other than food next week. Unless I get distracted by Mimi’s invitation to tell about a kitchen failure.

P.P.P.S. I have some more work to do on improving my macaron technique. Then I will share how to make them, although I do not promise they will be as good as Ladurée’s.

    I’m assembling the ingredients right now. Today is TORTE DAY. I think I’m just as excited as my son is. I really think I’m going to have to post pictures.

  • Me, too! I bet I could organize YOUR house, no problem. You’d have to watch my pack of wild boys, though. (Ok, I only have two, but they attain pack-like qualities at times.) I can’t wait for the recipe!

  • Saved by GrandMama, who convinced my sweet boy that it would be easier on his momma if we just had Root Beer Floats, so NO Torte making for me today. Which is a GOOD thing, because now I can go to dinner with my favorite man while the kids are at church, then pick up a group of boys for an all night slumber party.
    Anyone wanna trade places with me tonight? It’s only TEN 10yearold boys. Really, that’s not too bad. They’ll only be up all night playing Playstation and Wii and XBox games, drinking endless bottles of Mountain Dew Code Red, and eating brownies and hot dogs. It’ll be a blast, I promise. Laura? Amy? Michelle? Anyone? No?
    Yeah, that’s what I figured.

  • Dee, I sympathize. I hope you have some dark chocolate around to deal with the resulting migraine. But the root beer floats are probably a better idea than the torte; I don’t remember liking anything that dark and dense when I was that age.

    Okay, the organization deal for macarons sounds like a good one. The offer will remain open indefinitely until I either learn how to organize or stop liking chocolate, so…probably forever. I would rather cook any day than try to figure out where to put things.

    Carol is pretty wicked, I agree. She has all this high-calorie stuff on her site. But someday I hope to have one of her paintings hanging in my living room. Or bedroom.

  • Me, too, Mimi! She did a beautiful one of Marquise de Sévigné the other day–love the blues. But I love her Ladurée ones, too, having a particular weakness for Ladurée. I am still trying to make up my mind which one I want, but I’d like to get one of hers to hang above my workspace–a beautiful image of Paris every time I look up from my computer. Although maybe I need another one where more people are likely to see it and enjoy it!

  • Sarah, I WOULD make them a prize, I swear, but they don’t keep and they don’t ship. You have to eat them the same day they’re made or they dry out too much–and they’re VERY fragile. I’ve hard some patisseries try to ship them, but I don’t know how they manage it or what kind of shape they’re in on arrival.

    I wonder if freezing them would help them not to dry out to eat for later. I think tests need to be done. 😀

  • Well, someone did say they freeze well, but the same person said they are best eaten a day later, which is absolutely wrong. So. Tests probably SHOULD be done, but on whose macaron? Because what if the freezing RUINED one?

    That would be a tragic loss. I think a freezer burned (or freezer flavored – you know, when it LOOKS ok, but then you bite into it and it tastes like a freezer) macaron would be even worse than a dry one. Maybe tests could be done on half of a misshapen one.

  • Your macarons look really good! You even got “the foot”, that ragged little circle around the bottom of the cookie, that is the sign of a true macaron. Bravo! And if you figure out the organization thing, let me know — the organization gene never got bundled into my dna.

  • Ah-ha. I have an idea. Helen, if you like MAKING macarons but not eating them, I’m pretty sure I know plenty of people who would be happy to oblige on the eating end.

  • Beautiful Macaroons! I love them! I made some a while ago with pistachios and they came out a delicate pale green colour – but the taste is sensational!
