My Father
My father has passed away. I’ll be back later. If you are reading this, please give a thought to his passing. He raised seven kids and never failed us, and that is a lot to say about anyone. When we celebrated his and my mother’s 50th wedding anniversary two weeks ago, many, many people there stopped to tell me that he and my mother were two of the people they loved best in all the world. And that, too, says a lot about my father. He was one of the people I loved best in all the world, too. Here he is:

Laura, I am so very sorry.
I will be marking the anniversary of my father’s death in a week. This sort of thing is very much on my mind.
I am thinking of you and your family.

I’m so sorry. The anniversary of my dad’s death is approaching too – it’ll be 14 years next month. It’s a heavy loss. I’ll be thinking of you.

I’m really sorry for you and your family, on the bright side, your parents did get to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary and therefore there was a recent good memory, which hopefully will help to ease the pain.
Mes condoléances.

Laura, I’m so sorry for your loss. There just aren’t any words to cover such grief.

I just went through the 5th anniversary of my mom’s passing. And you helped make it better, with your wit and charm and kind words. I only wish I could do the same for you.
You are in my thoughts, and in my prayers, today and in the days to come.
hang on very tight to the love that you shared with him.
Know that you are a light to others.
Cry when you need to.
Laugh even when you think you shouldn’t.
Remember him with smiles.
Hugs to you and yours.

Thank you, everyone. I never realized before, when I was the one offering sympathy, how much the kind words and thoughts can help.

Dear Laura — After 3 1/2 months, it finally occurred to me to check your website for something about your father.

Please add me to that list. He was a wonderful mentor and a wonderful friend, and I miss him every day. I hope you and your family — especially your dear mother — are doing well.
