Friday Book Club! What do you recommend?

I’m starting Friday Book Club early because I need book recs! After a lovely re-read of Laura Kinsale’s Flowers from the Storm for our class (and before that, several Terry Pratchett books), I then got bogged down in not one but three different books that everyone else raved about and that just didn’t do it for me. (When this happens, I always start to feel like E.T.–alien and odd on some strange planet.)

Maybe I need a good non-fiction book again. But I’m really hankering for a great fantasy like Martha Wells writes, or Lois Bujold, or Ilona Andrews, only I’ve read all theirs and they don’t write fast enough! Maybe it’s time for some more re-reads–my weekend with Pratchett and Kinsale was lovely.

What are you reading? Any recommendations for me or everyone else? Anything you’re looking forward to?

Happy Weekend! (Sure, a little early–why not? Let’s pretend it’s Friday already!)

Have you tried Sharon Shinn? I may like the Twelve Houses series best (first one is Mystic and Rider), but Archangel (and following books) is good, too. Also her YA series (first is The Safekeeper’s Secret). She’s got a good backlist, also with some standalones (I like Summers at Castle Auburn). And another fantasy series begins with Troubled Waters (this one still being written; 3rd book comes out in the fall).

  • This is a little past the time when you asked for rec’s, but those are some of my favorite authors, and if you like them you might also like Connie Willis (“To Say Nothing of the Dog” is great), or the new trilogy by Rachel Bach starting with “Fortune’s Pawn.” I found that once I started the trilogy, I needed to read the whole thing straight through, as the first two end on cliffhangers. Generally I hate cliffhangers, but here, they worked.

If you’re not already a fan of Neil Gaiman, and need an audiobook, Lenny Henry reading “Anansi Boys” is really good.
